Teaching English Courses Online - How to make money online teaching English

Teaching English Courses Online - How to make money online teaching English

Teaching the English language online is becoming more and more popular. Using MSN messenger, Skype or any other web-cam chat client can get you work teaching English! You can set your own hours and availability, and the pay isn't bad either if you're a good instructor! There are also dedicated online language schools who hire instructors for their students.

Here are a few basic things that you’ll need:

  • A computer with internet connection and headphones.
  • Expertise in teaching a language (preferably English).
  • TEFL or similar certification..
  • The ability to compose lessons if you decide to go solo.
  • A web-site (optional).

There are some steps that you should follow to be able to teach English courses online.

         1.  Ideally, you should have some sort of certification to show to your prospective students or employers. It's much better then not having one, and besides, you'll learn a lot if you do decide to go through some sort of certification program.

            2.  After you get your certification, you can then search for students or an online school. The easiest way is to do a search. There are even sites that will let you post your information and they will get students for you for a small fee. Many language students will post the need for an online tutor on language bulletin boards. Some will request free instruction, but most will pay.

            3.
Offer a competitive rate locally per session at the location of the student, and probably a little less since you are teaching online. Online teaching may not make you rich, however, it is always in demand and there's plenty of work. You just have to go out and get it!

            4.
Start teaching! If going solo, you may want to compose some lessons in advance so you don't have to wing it the entire session. Most online language schools already have lessons composed.

            Let’s imagine the following situation.
You have a student who wants to learn English courses online with you. Normally, you would go to your car, drive through the town, get into traffic jams, arrive too late, spend money on fuel, loose time on the way…

Now imagine this. You have a student who wants to learn English courses online with you. You get yourself a fresh coffee, go to your PC, login to the virtual classroom, call your student via Skype and you start your lesson.

Wouldn’t it be great?… But why would?… It IS great!

Internet has changed our lifestyle in so many ways over the last decade. Nowadays, for most of us it is a vital part of our daily life.

Now it can change the way you teach, the way you learn and the way you earn your living.

Even two years ago, this was still sci-fi but with the development of high speed internet access and great software like Skype you have all at hand what you need to take your offline teaching business online. That’ll  mean you can earn your money teaching English courses online!

A long time ago I had to take a decision. It was obvious that the financial crisis in the US would sooner or later hit us here in Europe. Recession would mean that it could become much harder to find customers in my region. At that time nearly 90% of my clients were offline clients.

With this emerging scenario I decided to take my business online. I thought this way I may have the chance to find clients in other countries which are not that hardly effected by the financial crisis.

Now I have to say that teaching English courses online was one of my best decisions so far. Over 90% of my clients are now online clients from around the globe. And the trend I can see in the e-learning sector seems to be opposite to the trend of the economy. Maybe because of the fear to lose their jobs people are willing to further invest in their skills  or simply because classic education has become so expensive over the years.

Teaching English Courses Online - What Is It?

Teaching English Courses Online- What Is It?

In order to define the concept of  "teaching English courses online"  we need the following methods.
For effective teaching to take place, a good method must be adopted by a teacher.
When deciding what teaching method to use for teaching english courses online, a teacher needs to consider students' background knowledge, environment, and learning goals. Teachers are aware that students learn in different ways, but almost all children will respond well to praise. Students have different ways of absorbing information and of demonstrating their knowledge. Teachers often use techniques which cater to multiple learning styles to help students retain information and strengthen understanding. A variety of strategies and methods are used to ensure that all students have equal opportunities to learn. A lesson plan may be carried out in several ways: Questioning, explaining, modeling, collaborating, and demonstratin

The image is a good one for helping to define teaching english courses online . It can be converted into a simple model as follows:

SUBJECT
|
|
STUDENT <----------------------------------------> TEACHER SETTING

"Teaching", in this model, is defined as the "the interaction of a student and a teacher over a subject." There may be one student or several in a class. In our case everything about teaching english courses is online. The students can be young or old, bright or below average intelligence, "normal" or physically challenged, highly motivated or "turned off," rich or poor, male or female.

The subject can be easy and straight forward or difficult and complex. The teacher may not be physically present, as with televised or computer-assisted instruction. But in most situations, the model holds up. A teacher, a student, and a subject. And where is the log? The model is enclosed in a box to represent the setting where teaching takes place. Teaching takes place somewhere, in some specific context. The institution may be highly selective, or "open door" in its admissions policies.

The climate for learning english courses online may be favorable or destructive, supportive or frustrating. The resources, both physical and human, may be lavish or meager. No teacher teaches in a vacuum. The setting makes a difference. Teaching english courses online involves a teacher trying to teach someone something somewhere.
